Hammertoes

 · Hammertoes are one of several types of toe deformities.

 · Hammertoe is a deformity of the second, third or fourth toes. In this condition, the toe is bent at the middle joint, resembling a hammer.

 · Left untreated, hammertoes can become inflexible and require surgery.

 · People with hammertoe may have corns or calluses on the top of the middle joint of the toe or on the tip of the toe.

   · This deformity can be aggravated by tight fitting shoes and can result in pain over the prominent bony areas on the top of the toe.

   ·  Treatment usually involves a shoe to better accommodate your deformed toe.

   ·  Foot orthotics with a soft top  lining may also alleviate pain.  If, after trying these treatments, you are still having difficulty, surgical treatment to straighten the toe may be necessary.
